Area Information

In 1887 the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway began construction from Kansas City to Chicago. A location was chosen as a terminal or division point between these 2 cities. Marceline received its name at the request of one of the directors of the new railroad, whose wife bore the somewhat Spanish name of "Marcelina."

So with a change of the last vowel, this became the name of the new railroad city. Coal was later found to be an abundant resource in this area. In 1937, Linn County was ranked 13th in coal producing counties of the state. It was not until 1903 that the Missouri Division of the Santa Fe was created by splitting the Chicago Division and Missouri Division making Marceline a more important railroad center.

The area's average high temperature is 76 degrees. The average annual low temperature is around 65 degrees.

Marceline's most famous citizen is undoubtedly the great American cartoonist, Walt Disney. Walt and his family arrived in Marceline in 1906 from Chicago. The Disneys sold the farm and moved to Kansas City in 1910. In 1938, Walt wrote in a letter to Marceline... "Everything connected with Marceline was a thrill to us... to tell the truth, more things of importance happened to me in Marceline than have ever happened since - or are likely to in the future."

Local events include the Show-Me Rugby Tournament, Walt Disney's Annual Hometown Toonfest, the Princess Tea, the Merchant's Christmas Open House, Peanut Night, Christmas Lighting And Santa Arriving celebration, the Marceline Annual City-Wide Garage Sale, Come Home to Marceline, an Old Fashioned Carnival, Games and Fireworks Display on the 4th of July, Saturdays in the Park (Gospel Sing), Bell Game, St. Bonaventure Fall Block Party and more. You'll also want to check out the Walt Disney Hometown Museum.

Family life is important in Marceline. The public school system is AAA rated and provides quality education. There is also a private school which has kindergarten, elementary and junior high facilities.

Nearby hospitals and medical centers include the Pershing Memorial Hospital, Macon County Samaritan Memorial Hospital and Sullivan County Memorial Hospital.

Local recreational facilities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, ballparks, country club, golf course, parks and area lakes. Within Linn County are General John J. Pershing State Park (known for the annual Pershing Balloon Derby), Fountain Grove Wildlife Area (the oldest waterfowl area in the state), the 10,670-acre Swan Lake Wildlife Refuge (renown as the "Wild Goose Capital of the World"), the 4,400-acre Thomas Hill Lake and the Long Branches lakes.
